オディロン・ルドンが描いた、1882年にフランスで出版されたエドガー・アラン・ポーの作品集『グロテスクな物語』の表紙絵※への応答として描いた作品。
ルドンの描く窓から顔を出す鳥は、明らかにポーの代表作である大鴉を示唆している。私は鴉を直接描かず、窓が開きかけている様子を描いた。窓が開いたら、鴉がいるかもしれないし、あなたにとっての鴉のような別の存在が、姿を現すかもしれない。それとも、窓を閉じてしまいたいだろうか。
A work created in response to the cover art by Odilon Redon for Edgar Allan Poe's collection of stories, "CONTES GROTESQUES"※, published in France in 1882.
The bird peering out from the window depicted by Redon clearly alludes to Poe's iconic raven.I did not depict the raven directly, but rather the appearance of a window being opened. Once the window is open, a raven might appear, or another presence—like a crow to you—might reveal itself.Or perhaps you'd rather shut the window.
lady Madeline

レディ・マデリンは、ポーのゴシック小説「アッシャー家の崩壊」の登場人物である。
物語はアッシャー家当主の古い友人である語り手が、アッシャー家に向かうところから始まる。不吉な佇まいの館と敷地は嫌な予感しかしない。再会した友人は異様な様子で、妹マデリンの死が近いことを語り手に打ち明ける。その時、マデリンがふいに（語り手は彼女が部屋にいることにすら気づいていなかったのだが）隅の方を横切り、部屋から出ていく。この場面を読んで私の頭に浮かんだイメージを描いたのが本作である。
「アッシャー家の崩壊」を読んだ方ならご存じの通り、マデリンにはこのあと凄惨な運命が待っている。語り手が屋敷に立ち入ることで物語が始まる、つまり読者が小説を読み始めることで、玉突きのように彼女が部屋から出て行き、ゆくゆく死を迎えるという構造は、物語とはいえ何だかやるせない気持ちになる。部屋から出て、そのままどこへでも行ってほしい、逃げ切ってほしい、そう願いたくなる。
絵のなかへは、誰も入り込むことはできず、彼女のゆく先を追って行けない。彼女がここを去ったという痕跡を、光の帯が糸をひくように表現して描いた。
Lady Madeline is a character in Edgar Allan Poe's Gothic novel "The Fall of the House of Usher." The story begins with the narrator's visit to the Usher house.The narrator, an old friend of the head of the Usher family, is invited to the house.the ominous appearance of the house and its grounds gives him a bad feeling.Upon meeting the friend again, the narrator is taken aback by his friend's strange appearance. Usher confides in him that his sister Madeline's death is near.At that moment, Lady Madeline, whose presence the narrator was unaware of, suddenly crosses around the corner and walks out of the room.My work”Lady Madeline” is the image that came to my mind when I read this scene.
As readers of the story know, a terrible fate awaits Madeline.The structure of the story begins when the narrator enters the house, that is, when the reader begins to read the novel, and she leaves the room and eventually dies, as if by a ball and chain, is somewhat unfulfilling, even though it is a story.I would hope that she would leave the room and go straight to wherever she was going, or that she would get away with it.
No one can enter the picture and follow her path.I drew the traces of her departure as if a band of light was trailing a thread.
